The Interview

What inspired you to pursue a career in design?
I think it would be the idea of problem solving. Good design is all about problem solving, and that is appealing to me..

What is your design philosophy or approach to creative problem-solving?
Always look at problems that are presented to you as opportunities. When you come by an obstacle, treat it as a challenge to push yourself further instead of pushing you back.

Who are your design influences or mentors, and how have they shaped your work?
I would say, Verner Panton, Charles and Ray Eames, Mies Van Der Rohe. They've all shaped my design philosophy in many ways. Charles and Ray Eames for always exploring different mediums, Verner Panton for staying fun and exciting, and Mies for staying honest and paying attention to detail.

What role do you think design plays in shaping communities and culture in the MENASA region?
I think design plays a huge role in shaping communities. If someone designs an article in a certain way, it could affect the behaviour and actions of the people using that particular object for generations to come.

How do you stay inspired and continue to evolve your creative practice?
I travel, and spend lots of time in nature. The more time I spend the with myself, the more I'm able to produce.

What are the biggest challenges facing designers in the MENASA region today?
Manufacturing probably, I find it difficult to find people that don't want to mass produce.
