Lina Alorabi is a designer whose practice explores the relationship between material culture, craftsmanship, and contemporary design. Born in Cairo in 1984 to a diplomat family, she spent her early years moving between countries, developing a fascination with the shifting built environments, objects, and material landscapes that surrounded her. This early exposure to different cultures and ways of living continues to inform her approach to design.

Alorabi earned a BA in Design from the Kent Institute of Art & Design in 2005 before moving to Berlin to work in a design studio. In 2010, she returned to Cairo, drawn by the richness of Egypt's craft traditions and cultural heritage. Since then, she has dedicated her practice to uncovering and collaborating with artisans across the city, seeking out overlooked forms of craftsmanship and revealing their contemporary relevance.

Each of her projects draws on a distinctly Egyptian source—whether material, technique, or cultural reference—reinterpreting it with sensitivity and originality while avoiding nostalgia or pastiche. Through this approach, she highlights the enduring value of local knowledge and making traditions within contemporary design discourse.

Alorabi's work has received international recognition and has been featured in publications including Architectural Digest, Wallpaper*, and Elle Decor. Blending heritage with contemporary design, her work reflects a commitment to creating objects and experiences that embody both cultural depth and functional elegance.

The Interview

What inspired you to pursue a career in design?
As the child of a diplomat, we often moved and I think my mother's care for creating a home and stability in each country influenced how I see objects as integral to our well-being.

How does your cultural or regional context influence your design work?
Being a designer in Egypt is like having a playground of expert craftsmen, materials and histories. It is a neverending well of inspiration.

What is your design philosophy or approach to creative problem-solving?
My approach is to always feed yourself knowledge from a variety of other fields outside of design. I also make sure to study the materials and craft/processes as they shape the design, its a collaboration..

Describe a project you're most proud of and why it's meaningful to you.
I think I'm most proud of the ouroboros bench. It was the product of a long development process, I created several designs before it and it was the culmination of that development. It was conceived almost as a dream.
