The Interview
What inspired you to pursue a career in design?
Our journey into design came naturally, as if it were woven into the fabric of our character. From childhood, our passions and aspirations have sparked a deep appreciation for creativity and storytelling. We believe that the desire to design is embedded within us.
How does your cultural or regional context influence your design work?
Our cultural and regional context serves as a profound source of inspiration for our design work. The rich tapestry of stories and cultural practices inherent in our region allows us to explore and celebrate the diverse heritage that surrounds us. This cultural baggage not only inspires our designs but also enables us to showcase the contrasts among different areas within the region. We are constantly sharing and discovering more about these cultural nuances, deepening our understanding of the intricate layers that define our surroundings. This ongoing exploration informs our creative process, allowing us to create designs that resonate with authenticity and foster connections among diverse communities.
What is your design philosophy or approach to creative problem-solving?
At Boo, our design philosophy is rooted in the belief that creativity stems from a deep understanding of cultural stories and human experiences. We approach problem-solving through empathy and collaboration, ensuring that our designs resonate with the communities we serve. By continuously exploring and discovering cultural nuances, we strive to craft designs that not only fulfill functional needs but also celebrate the richness and power of our culture. Ultimately, our goal is to create meaningful experiences that foster connection and joy.
Describe a project you're most proud of and why it's meaningful to you.
Medallion lighting collection, perfectly reflects our philosophy of turning ideas into tangible products. The exposure we received through Design Doha, Dubai Design Week, and Milan Design Week was a significant leap for us, helping more people discover Boo Design's essence. Inspired by traditional antique jewelry from the Arab world, the collection stemmed from our fascination with its geometry and ornamental details. Although sharing such a personal idea initially felt daunting, we learned that trusting our instincts can lead to powerful outcomes. The Medallion collection, which includes functional artworks tables, armchairs, and lighting pieces reinterprets the beauty of historical designs while showcasing our commitment to blending heritage with contemporary aesthetics. Its success has reinforced the importance of embracing creativity and sharing our vision with the world.
Who are your design influences or mentors, and how have they shaped your work?
Our design influences span a diverse array of fields, encompassing not just designers but also architects and artists who have significantly shaped our creative perspective. Visionaries like fashion designers Azzedine Alaïa and Elsa Schiaparelli have inspired us with their ability to blend artistry with wearability, pushing the boundaries of form and function. In architecture, figures like Rem Koolhaas have challenged traditional concepts, advocating for innovative spaces that reflect contemporary society. Additionally, artists such as Olafur Eliasson and MF Husain inspire us with their profound ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought through their work. Together, these influences encourage us to approach design as a multidisciplinary practice that draws from various sources of creativity, enriching our perspectives and helping us create truly unique and resonant designs.
What role do you think design plays in shaping communities and culture in the MENASA region?
Design plays a crucial role in shaping communities and culture in the MENASA region by fostering innovative thinking and encouraging collaboration. It serves as a catalyst for change, prompting individuals to consider new perspectives and approaches to everyday challenges. By facilitating communication and cooperation, design unites people from diverse backgrounds, helping to break down barriers and enhance humanity.
