On display for the first time, a selection of 158 wooden doors, frames, and windows invites visitors to explore everyday objects that are often overlooked - but carry great historical significance.
The exhibition aims to explore Qatar’s heritage wooden doors from two perspectives: as carriers of cultural history, and an ongoing design typology. Galleries set in the former location of a workshop will be a site of craftsmanship, highlighting the doors’ conservation and consolidation process, material, shape, and iconography. Continuous workshop activities, led by AKTC experts, will becarried on throughout the exhibition period.
A powerful and immersive installation in the palace’s yard, created by AKTC in collaboration with Qatari artist Yousef Fakhroo, envisions a negative-space reconstruction of a Qatari home. As doors represent a threshold, often leading to intimate spaces , the outdoor installation opens an opportunity of emotional and sensory experiences. Light and sound-scapes bring life and additional meaning to the rooms and living practices behind each door.
The exhibition centers community knowledge as a vital source to retrace past social lives, neighborhoods, and narratives.
