Muqarnas of Sadu

The Muqarnas of Sadu

Exhibition

The Muqarnas of Sadu is an immersive art installation that merges the two-dimensional artistry of Sadu weaving with the three-dimensional complexity of Muqarnas art. Artist Ghadeer Mohammad transforms Sadu’s bold, symbolic patterns—rooted in Bedouin culture—into dynamic spatial elements, creating an immersive experience where viewers engage with the patterns in an interactive context.

The structure, composed of over 4,000 mill finished aluminium pipes and 6,000 polished T-corners, forms a dome where Muqarnas, with its origins in Islamic architecture, serves as the structural skeleton, while Sadu motifs are distributed across its surface.

Muqarnas embodies ancestral architectural precision and spiritual depth, while Sadu carries generational storytelling and cultural values. By rendering Sadu in three-dimensional form through the logic of Muqarnas, the installation reflects the idea that heritage is multidimensional. Light filters through the polished aluminium, casting shifting reflections and shadows that respond to the viewer’s movement. Designed using parametric modelling software, the dome balances aesthetic perfection and technical precision, creating a space for contemplation and connection to the past. The piece was originally conceived for the 2025 edition of the Sadu Art and Design Initiative (SADI).
