Monumental A Monobloc’s Memoir

Exhibition

A Monobloc’s Memoir examines how a chair made of cold matter can inhabit a massive space in our collective memories, even as its presence has remained inconspicuous. Wasn’t it quiet when you spoke? when you cried? when you kissed? Maybe it wobbled when you cackled? Did it define normality, such that it was never questioned? The elephant in the room sat on a Monobloc, that’s why it went unnoticed.

In retrospect, the Monobloc has become an everlasting connection with the past, the familiar face in a crowd. We grow reminiscent simply at the site of one: an immigrant’s ubiquitous piece of home. The exhibition seeks to express gratitude to these chairs by portraying the lively moments shared upon them. If the meeting of souls precedes the meeting of bodies, maybe our souls have already taken a seat.

The Monumental series was designed in Paris, France and produced in Doha, Qatar. These life-size surrealistic extensions were constructed from certified recycled PETG, similar to the Monobloc’s original material.
